    • Tonsorium Bar in The Lodge; St. Edward State Park in Kenmore
    Register

It's almost officially boating season again and time to meet at the Tonsorium Bar in The Lodge for a couple hours reprieve from the winter blues. Same Drydock rules as always; no agenda, no boats, just a couple of hours to see your PNW Fleet friends.

The Lodge is located inside St. Edward State Park in Kenmore. Food and drinks are served at the bar. There will be tables and seating in our room. The address is:

    14477 Juanita Drive NE

    Kenmore, WA 98028

Google maps will be confused about the entrance; enter the park and stay right at the Y in the driveway. There is signage, but it helps to know ahead of time. Parking is free if you have a Discover Pass for the park lots. A day pass for the park is $10 if you don't have a Discover Pass and there are pay boxes located around the park, or there is Valet at the hotel that is $10.

    See you all there!

Seattle Yacht Club's official webpage for this annual event

Some history on the event: Opening Day, the official opening of Seattle's boating season sponsored by Seattle Yacht Club, includes a celebration of many kinds of water activities. This year's festivities will include a morning of crew races, a sailboat race, and, of course, the grand Opening Day boat parade on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

According to the 1964 reminiscences of a Seattle Yacht Club member, the first Opening Day took place in early May 1913. He recalled a parade and a regatta in Elliott Bay.

The first Opening Day parade through the Montlake Cut was in 1920 after the Seattle Yacht Club moved to its new (and present) facilities in Portage Bay. Spectators lined both sides of the Cut to view the 25 or 30 boats as they paraded by, flying their dress flags. The boats finished the celebration with a regatta in Lake Washington sponsored by the Queen City Yacht Club.

The Opening Day Parade and Regatta became a spring tradition, which survived the war years. Opening Day 1946, was the biggest and most festive ever. It included members of every yacht club in Puget Sound and the Royal Vancouver and the Royal Victoria Yacht Clubs from British Columbia, Canada.

As always, the Opening Day Parade starts at noon the first Saturday in May with the blast of a cannon and the raising of the Montlake Bridge. Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day has become the nation's largest regional celebration of water, spring and the opening of boating season.

Opening Day in Seattle is a family affair; families decorate their boats for the festivities and parades; families spread blankets on the shoreline and spend hours watching and picnicking. Families dream of the boats they someday will own.

Greetings and Welcome to the 2024 Bell Harbor Rendezvous to be held on June 14-16, 2024.

This e-mail contains sign up information and important details.  Please click the Register button above to register, let us know if you are joining the Friday Parade, add boat details, and sign up for the Saturday night dinner.

The 2024 Bell Harbor Rendezvous is a first come, first served event. Registration is open until the marina is full or May 20, whichever first occurs.  Dinner reservations will be taken until there are 70 signed up, with a wait list started after.

    Here are event details:

Marquee Class:  For our 27th Annual Bell Harbor Rendezvous – our marquee or featured class of boats will be β€œBoats with A Mission” or boats that used to have a job. The belle of the ball in this class will be the Steamship Virginia V, a former ferry and member of the Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet. Also expected are Teal, a former Alaska Fish and Game boat; Gyrfalcon, a former Alaska survey boat; Owl, a former tugboat; two former fishing boats, the UW Crew Launch β€œConny” which has been fully restored and was the actual launch that the 1936 β€œBoys in the Boat” UW crew trained with; and from our Canadian Fleet the Messenger III, an actual β€œmissionary vessel” from 1947-1968 bringing medical and spiritual comfort to Vancouver Island’s West Coast.  We are hoping for as many Canadian vessels as possible!

    ITINERARY

FRIDAY, JUNE 14:  Join the annual Bell Harbor Boat Parade off of Elliott Bay Marina at 1400 hours (2 PM). Look for the parade leader, Maranee, and listen to the β€œCYA Parade Director” on Channel 68. Boats will parade down the waterfront and will gather off of Bell Harbor Marina to be directed in by the harbormaster. The dock plan will be distributed to registered participant boats a week before the event. Please indicate in your registration whether you will participate in the parade. Once you have arrived, please pick up your welcome/goody bag from aboard Maranee with special thanks to Mike Passage and Laura Shifflette for their donation of the bags.

Welcome reception/taco bar aboard Virginia V:  Gather at the Steamship Virginia V at the end of β€œC” dock for a welcome reception starting at 1800 (6 PM). Everyone is invited to join us. Bring your own beverage and enjoy a catered taco bar thanks to our generous sponsors. We hope to have a number of visitors from the other fleets of the CYA and this is our chance to see our friends from other fleets and celebrate the longest running and largest event in the Classic Yacht Association. When you register be sure to let us know how many are coming from your boat so we can get a head count for food planning purposes!

SATURDAY, JUNE 15:  Continental breakfast at the head of the dock provided by Husky Deli. Breakfast will run from 0800 to 0930 and will include coffee, pastries, fruit, and protein items.

Boat Show – Open to the public from 10-4. You are expected to open your boat for public tours and to complete at least one volunteer shift. Thanks to our generous sponsors, we are again providing this fabulous weekend free of charge (except for the dinner Saturday night) and in exchange and in support of the CYA’s mission of education about classic boats, public interaction is required, and it is essential. Registered participants will be receiving instructions about their volunteer shift in confirming e-mails for event participants.  Also, if you want to stay at Bell Harbor Marina on Thursday night or Sunday night you will have to make a reservation directly with the marina and pay your moorage.  Call Mike to reserve at 206-787-3951.  Make your reservation early – once the dock plan is available it will be provided to Mike and he will try to put you in your assigned slip if you decide to arrive on Thursday.

Dinner:  Our festive Bell Harbor Celebration Dinner will again be provided by Anthony’s Homeport Restaurant in the upstairs private dining room. Social hour at 5:45; dinner to be served at 6:30. To look at the menu, click here: Anthony's Menu. No need to select menu choices in advance! You can buy dinner tickets for $100 per person, the actual cost is higher, $85 per person plus 20% tip and tax – or $111.35. Again, thanks to our generous sponsors, you are paying $100 per person. There is a strict 70 seat limit on our dinner, therefore only members with boats in the marina for the show can attend the dinner. If we get more than 70 dinner requests, we will start a wait list. Beverages will be available from Anthony’s by order at your own expense.

    SUNDAY, JUNE 16

BREAKFAST:   The Sunday breakfast will run from 8:30-9:30 at the head of the dock. Special thanks to our event sponsor, Husky Deli, who is providing this breakfast for us as a donated item. The menu will be similar to Saturday.

Throughout the weekend look for the auction table where the items that are frequently raffled at this event will be auctioned this year. Make your bids on Saturday during the day and early Sunday morning! Winners will be announced on Sunday morning at 9:30 with all proceeds going to the PNW Fleet of the CYA to help offset the cost of this event. Watch your e-mail for auction updates!

Boat Show:  Show hours are from 10-4.

Awards Ceremony:  Will take place at 4 PM at the bottom of the stairs. Award for Best Engine Preservation, and People’s Choice and two People’s Choice Runner Ups will be given. Unless you have arranged to stay on Sunday night with the Bell Harbor Marina, please depart after the Awards Ceremony and not before.  No early departures please!

Post Bell Harbor Cruise:  Vice Commodore Mike Passage and Laura Shifflette are in charge of the post Bell Harbor Cruise.  Details will be forthcoming shortly.
